Taxonomic Rank

In biotic characterization, rank is the level (the relative position) in a taxonomic pecking order. Cases of taxonomic ranks are species, class, family, and class.

Every rank subsumes under it various less general classifications. The rank of species, and particular of the variety to which the species has a place is essential, which indicates that it should not be essential to define ranks different than the proposed.
